Some weeks ago at a Sunday service I spoke that in 60 years of our church history we had not yet seen anyone from this church lose his or her life on the account of following Christ. Today we do not have one, but two Godly men from the same family.
Then, calling the crowd to him, Jesus said, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him take up his cross and follow me.’
How these words related to the 2 bothers who lost their life to follow Christ. Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. (v35). For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? (v36)
What is your soul? God breathed the breath of life into Adam and he also did it for you. You cannot see it, but it lasts forever. According to the words of Jesus here, there are two measuring points for the value of a soul. 1. “What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (v36) Here we can see that your soul is of greater value than the whole world. 2. Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it, (v35). Jesus Christ and His gospel are of much greater value than your soul or life. If you lose your life for the sake of Christ and the gospel, you gain:
Here is a Christian scale of values:
The whole world (Lower value)
Your life (Higher value)
Jesus Christ and his gospel (Highest value)
Some of us, in our sadness, might be inclined to say, “They shouldn’t have gone to Afghanistan. It’s too dangerous and to costly! It is just not worth it!” But Jesus says, Whoever would save his life will lose it, But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it, (v35). Pray for great comfort for the family, who lost their two faithful servants of Jesus Christ for their mission field. We are tired of our own shallowness, compromise and half-heartedness. So cut the knot of pride and pretentiousness in our souls today.
Deliver us from being about ourselves.
Help us to become what you call us to be
Show us what you would have us to do.
Raise up from this place hundreds of men and women who will count following Your Son gloriously worth it, even to the cost of our lives.
